MAVIS our TRAVELLER

HMG 194K

My latest restoration project a 1971 MORRIS TRAVELLER. Brought on 06/04/2001 from north Woolwich.

She came with a selection of spares including, Set of glass, Two new old stock front wings, Recon engine, Gearbox, Set of lights, Bonnet and various small parts

Unlike Marigold Mavis did not come with any history so if you know of any history please let me know.

The chassis of Mavis is very good only the cross member is a bit grotty and has caused a couple of small holes in the floor pan above, One of which has a very bad  repair done. The sill boxing plates are ok with just some surface rust which I have cleaned up. The interior is pretty good as well just the back of the back seat has a small tear. The woodwork is non excitant just some powdery stuff held together with old stain and varnish. So I am going to try to renew the woodwork myself if I can source some decent English Ash.

SOME PICS OF MAVIS WHEN BROUGHT HER

I have had Mavis up on axle stands and crawled underneath armed with a hammer and screwdriver and gone in search of the Rust Worm. The centre cross member has seen better days so will be replaced. I have found some rather dubious repairs to the inner sills a couple of the patches were fixed with seam sealer and what I assume is meant to be welding which I levered off with a screwdriver ooops!!!!. So new panels for them then. The outer sills are also a bit lacey so I'll replace those as well.

I have decided to purchase new timber from Traveller Timbers I found Rob extremely helpful answering all my dumb questions one Saturday morning, So the timber has been ordered and I await Mavis's new rear end.

I have spent a pleasant couple of days removing all the interior and putting it in our loft. The timber and the rear end of Mavis has been removed and another rust worm search undertaken, Not too bad the rear section of the off side flitch panel is beyond redemption so another panel has been added to the list.

The offending off side flitch panel. All the rust was covered in a Waxoyl type rust treatment, Didn't work did it.

The rear wheel arches are good with only a couple of patches of surface rust, Which has been attacked with a wire brush in an electric drill and rust treated then sprayed with grey primer. The wings were removed and thrown away as they were rotten with rust, A pair of new old stock front wings came with Mavis so I have only to add a pair of rear wings to my list. I am finding the rust on Mavis a bit of an enigma, The main floor area is fine and solid, The inner wings are all ok but the outer wings and one half of a flitch panel were really bad with rust, Yet she had been treated at the factory I assume, with a waxoyl type of anti-rust treatment which is intact on all the rotten panels as well as the good bits strange. All the needed repair panels have arrived, Mostly from M.G.M spares so I will start the welding soon, I want to remove the engine and gearbox first to lighten the load on the chassis when I start removing parts of the sill assembly.

A couple of pictures showing the good condition of the rear inner wings.
